Synopsis:

Partanen owns a machine shop and believes in hard work. Having to cope with his inept employees and demand for increased production, he decides to hire a new worker. Enter Moilanen, a reclusive and restrained young man who can lathe metal as quickly and accurately as a machine. Partanen´s wife has just divorced him, taking their son and dog with her. Things go completely awry when Moilanen starts answering every request with "I would prefer not to". Partanen tries to understand him, as fi taking the role of a patient father. Eventually, though, he has to accept the fact that you cannot shape life like metal. The story is loosely based on Herman Melville´s novel Bartleby.
