Finnish films won nine international awards during the summer

During June, July and August, Finnish films have won altogether nine international awards at festivals around Europe.
Petteri Saario and Juha Taskinen´s documentary film Sergei The Healer (Sergei Verenseisauttaja) won in June the Silver Horn award at Krakow Film Festival in Poland. Sergei the Healer is a depiction of the life in a small Russian Karelian village, where young Sergei grows up in the middle of the most fabulous primeval forests in North Europe. The film is produced by Petteri Saario / Taiga Films.

The jury of Grimstad Norwegian Short Film Festival awarded the short documentary Between Dreams by Iris Olsson by nominating it for the European Short Film Award 2009. The film depicts the 3rd class passengers of a Trans-Siberian train, and their dreams. The film is produced by Nisi Masa, Mirumir and Moviement RU.

The Home of Dark Butterflies (Tummien perhosten koti) by Dome Karukoski won in June the Silver Castle main award at Espinho International Film Festival in Portugal, focusing on first and second features. The film is produced by Markus Selin & Jukka Helle / Solar Films, international sales are handled by TrustNordisk.
Two student films awarded in June are the short documentary Ghosts by Jan Ijäs – awarded by Grand Prix at International Short Film Festival “Kratkofil” in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina – and Shadows (Varjot) by Hanna Bergholm – awarded in the student film competition at In the Palace Festival in Balchik, Bulgaria.

Stone Pastures, a documentary film by Donagh Coleman won in the beginning of August the Grand Prix of the Cervino Cinemountain Film Festival in Valtournenchen, Italy – a festival focusing on the thematics of mountains. Stone Pastures tells the story of a nomadic family living on the Himalayan plateau of Chantang, Ladakh. The film is produced by Jouko Aaltonen / Illume.

Mika Kaurismäki´s fiction feature Three Wise Men (Kolme viisasta miestä) won both the jury´s main award Cabrito de Plata and the Audience Award at the Monterrey International Film Festival in Mexico (August 21 – 29, 2009). The competition featured seven films from around the world. The stars of the film, Kari Heiskanen, Pertti Sveholm and Timo Torikka have earlier won for their roles the Best Actor Award of the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. The film is produced by the director´s own company Marianna Films, international sales are handled by Wide Management.

The family film Stormheart (Myrsky) by Kaisa Rastimo won the Award for Best Film at the 7th Kodomotachino Kinder Film Festival in Tokyo. The 10-year-old main actress Ronja Arvilommi was present to receive the award. The film is produced by Antti-Veikko Salo & Pekka Levola / Stormheart, international sales are handled by NonStop Sales.
