The House of Branching Love and Last Cowboy Standing in Top Four
14.9.2009

Last weekend´s domestic premiere, the documentary film The Living Room of the Nation (Kansakunnan olohuone) by Jukka Kärkkäinen, opened in Finland with modest weekend results (115 admissions), which is unfortunately very common for documentaries on cinema screens. In the case of this film, another factor is that a part of the potential audience has seen the film already at DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival last January.

Living Room of the Nation portrays a number of Finnish living rooms and is a story of changes, the inevitable passing of time, and the human desire to be needed, visible. The film had its international premiere in May at the Planete Doc Review Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland and it is competing for the title of Best Nordic Documentary at Nordisk Panorama, opening next week in Reykjavik. It is produced by Sami Jahnukainen / Mouka Filmi and distributed in Finland by Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus with 8 release prints. International sales are handled by Deckert Distribution.

Mika Kaurismäki´s The House of Branching Love (Haarautuvan rakkauden talo), has 67 224 admissions after four weekends in cinemas. This weekend´s result was 10 537. The film is now number three in Finland´s Top Ten. It is distributed in Finland by FS Film, now with 36 prints. The film is produced by Mika Kaurismäki´s own production company Marianna Films. International sales are handled by Wide Management.

Another domestic film on the chart is Last Cowboy Standing (Skavabölen pojat) by Zaida Bergroth. It now got a weekend audience of 3 775 (number 4 in Top Ten, total admissions after the second weekend 11 659). Last Cowboy Standing is produced by Jarkko Hentula / Juonifilmi and distributed in Finland by FS Film. Its international premiere will take place at Pusan International Film Festival in October.

The next domestic premiere in Finland is The Interrogation (Kuulustelu) by Jörn Donner (September 25). It is a story based on real life about the difficult and mainly impossible choices of Kerttu Nuorteva, a Finnish-born Soviet citizen and spy, who was dropped into Finland by parachute in February 1942 and later arrested and interrogated. The film is produced by Mark Lwoff and Misha Jaari / Jörn Donner Productions and distributed in Finland by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Finland.
