Finland´s State Film Award and State Quality Awards 2009
2.11.2009

Finland´s Minister of Culture and Sport Stefan Wallin gave the State Film Award to 2009 to director Aleksi Mäkelä in late September. The state culture awards are given annually in the fields of cinema, visual arts, design, architecture and photography. Mäkelä was described by the National Council for Cinema as a versatile film maker who has directed feature films, TV series, commercials as well as music videos. Out of all current film directors in Finland, Mäkelä has reached the largest domestic audience: his films, mostly based on his own original ideas, have sold altogether over 2 Million tickets, helping to strengthen the overall position of domestic film production.
Mäkelä´s latest film Hellsinki (Rööperi) was also one of the main beneficiaries of the State Quality Awards, given to film producers by the National Council for Cinema in early October. The producer of Hellsinki, Solar Films (Markus Selin and Jukka Helle), as well as the producers of Niko and the Way to the Stars (Niko – lentäjän poika), Anima Vitae & Cinemaker (Hannu Tuomainen and Petteri Pasanen), both received 60 000 Euro State Quality Awards. Other awards amounted to 10 000 – 40 000 Euro and were given to 12 other titles.
International sales of Hellsinki are handled by TrustNordisk.. International sales of Niko and the Way to the Stars are handled by Telepool.
