Six Finnish films in Berlinale official programme
22.1.2010

While Berlinale celebrates its 60th birthday during February 11 – 21, Finland also has good reasons for celebration. The prestigious festival has invited four fresh and two older Finnish titles to participate in its various sections, in addition to which the actress Pihla Viitala represents Finland as one of the Shooting Stars.

Bad Family (Paha perhe) by Aleksi Salmenperä has its international premiere in the Panorama. It is produced by Aki Kaurismäki / Sputnik Oy and premieres in Finland on January 29, distributed by Sandrew Metronome Distribution Finland. International sales are handled by the Match Factory GmbH. The main cast includes Ville Virtanen, Lauri Tilkanen and Pihla Viitala, who is present in Berlin also as one of this year’s EFP Shooting Stars.

As many as three Finnish films have been invited to the Generation competition. Generation 14+ presents the short fiction film Whispering in a Friend’s Mouth (Älä kuiskaa ystävän suuhun), directed by Hannaleena Hauru and produced by Jussi Rantamäki / Aamu Filmcompany Ltd.

Generation K+ has invited the short animation film The Egg Race (Munaralli), directed by Kaisa Penttilä and produced by Liisa Penttilä / Edith film as well as the feature fiction Pudana Last of the Line (Sukunsa viimeinen), directed by Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio and produced by Jouko Aaltonen and Pertti Veijalainen / Illume Ltd. Pudana Last of the Line is the seventh Markku Lehmuskallio film in official Berlinale selection. It will premiere in Finland on February 26, distributed by Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Berlinale also looks back on the past decades. A retrospective section called 4 Decades of the Forum has invited two Finnish films to participate – The Match Factory Girl (Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö) by Aki Kaurismäki from the year 1989 and Seven Songs from the Tundra (Seitsemän laulua tundralta) by Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio from the year 2000.
