Directors

Juuso Paaso

Juuso Paaso is a cultural worker active as a writer, musician and producer within music, poetry, journalism and archival work. His main interest is to find meaning, weight and context for marginalized events and activities, whether historical or contemporary. The highly acclaimed Oranssi archive of Finnish zines was founded on his initiative. He has also written a MA thesis about the zine culture in Finland. Auringonpimennys is Paaso’s first foray into film making, based on a long friendship with Azar Saiyar and years of research into themes from his family history. Currently he is planning a book about the Finnish experimental underground music of the 2000s.

Azar Saiyar

Azar Saiyar is a filmmaker and media artist whose films are often based on various kinds of archives. She communicates with the found material, by watching, listening and getting lost in the details. For her, working with archives is also connected to the idea of shared knowledge. At the same time, archives can deceive us. There are stories, groups of people and ways of life that are missing. This lack of certain images and words is an important part in Saiyar’s narration. Her films have been screened at international film and media art festivals, galleries, exhibitions, museums and from television. She received the AVEK Award for Media Art in 2022.
