His newfound infatuation shatters their protective symbiosis, sending Robin into freefall. When Robin gets convicted for a felony, Alex blames himself for naively letting his first love distract him from his responsibility for his brother, and pours all his efforts into saving Robin. The Summer Book is an adaptation of Tove Jansson’s much loved novel to the big screens. In The Summer Book, Tove Jansson distills the essence of the summer—its sunlight and storms—into crystalline vignettes.
The Summer Book tells the story of the relationship between Sophia, an eight-year-old girl who is growing up fast, and her grandmother, who is nearing the end of her life. They are spending time together with Sophia’s father, at the family summer house on a tiny unspoiled island in the Gulf of Finland. All three are coming to terms with the recent death of Sophia’s mother in very different ways.
Anders is largely consumed by grief for his wife and his thwarted plans to plant a polar tree in her honour. Grandmother meanwhile makes it her mission to keep a watchful eye on Sophia. She is unsentimental and wise, if a little cranky in her approach; whilst Sophia is impetuous and volatile, but tends to her grandmother with the care of a new parent when she sees the vulnerabilities that old age bring.
Together they amble over coastline and forest in easy companionship, build boats from bark, explore the surrounding islands and the new fanciful neighbours and write a study of their findings. They discuss things that matter to young and old alike: life, death, the nature of God and of love. By the end of the summer, Grandmother is able to step back as the bond between Sophia and her father deepens and she can take her leave of this life happy that this task is complete.
