Short film Are You Hungry? picked by Sundance

December 11, 2019

The comedy short Are You Hungry?, directed by Teemu Niukkanen and written by Antti Toivonen, was selected to the Sundance Film Festival. The film is produced by Komeetta.

The festival received 10,397 short film submission, a record number, and 74 of them were selected to the program. Are You Hungry? is among the 19 films screening in the section International Narrative Short Films. It premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Are You Hungry? is a bold comedy with a heart of gold. A single mother, out of touch with the modern world, is trying to guide her son safely towards homosexuality. The film stars Pirjo Lonka and Matvei German.

The film’s director Teemu Niukkanen is happy that Sundance has seen the value of the genre: “Comedy should deal with difficult topics, challenging the audience’s world view and taking down taboos.”

The filmmakers’ previous short film Fucking Bunnies was selected to Sundance in 2017, and it traveled to over 100 festivals since. It was also nominated for a Finnish national film award Jussi. Niukkanen is developing his first feature film together with producer Daniel Kuitunen.

Sundance Film Festival takes place January 23 – February 2, 2020, in Park City, Utah.
